About Steven Kazianis

Dr. Kazianis is an Assistant Professor of Research involved in several aspects of Xiphophorus research, including gene mapping ,and the molecular genetics of melanoma formation in hybrid and non-hybrid Xiphophorus. As a graduate student he worked at Department of Biology, New York University under Richard Borowsky and studied the molecular genetics of melanoma derived from the Pu2 pigment pattern of X. variatus. Later, he worked under the supervision of Drs. Donald C. Morizot and Rodney S. Nairn at MD Anderson Cancer Center. He continued his studies of fish melanomagenesis, with emphasis on the production of a Xiphophorus gene map, and identification of genes implicated in the regulation of melanaoma.

Currently at the Texas State University | San Marcos, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry , the Kazianis laboratory continues studies of fish melanoma using several crosses, involving X. andersi, X. couchianus, X. maculatus, X. nezahualcoyotl, X. helleri and X. variatus. The molecular genetics of both spontaneous, UV-induced and MNU-induced melanomagenesis is actively being studied with the help of funding from the National Cancer Institute. Current members of the laboratory include Earlanda Williams, Madonna Mamerow and Vandeeta Khanolkar.
